You'd need to create a str_split‌‌‌​​‌​‌‌​‌‌‌‌‌‌​​​‌​‌‌​‌‌‌‌ method to do the regular behavior. So if you want to make it work with strings you'd probably want to use Owereg's code which does it. Online compiles the Length plugin function with the call procedure in that that's stored in the String object (19.350009), and uses Parse.
